    Thanks Zach for this really helpflul infographic. We have tried a few of the techniques you listed. Providing a free service in order to get testimonials or backlinks in return is something we haven’t done so far. Definitely gonna try it.

    Unless you’re paying nothing to the people doing all these things, then none of them are free.

    And even if you are paying your marketing people nothing, most of these things *still* aren’t free.

    At least one of them has actual monthly subscription rates — that’s a notion of “free” that my definition of the word is insufficiently elastic to embrace.

    Others require hits to revenue, which is an expense by any other name, or investments in infrastructure or actual product to fulfill your giveaway or incentive.

    My biggest objection to the whole thing, however, is that it perpetuates the stupid notion that marketing can be done at no cost. Which means it has no value. Both of which are dead wrong.

  3. Doing something at no monetary cost does not equate to it having no value!

    Much worthwhile marketing can be done at very little or no financial cost, time cost yes but for bootstrappers spending time is about the only resource they have to build their business.

    Marketers thrive on telling us that we cannot DIY and need to pay for professional services, in many cases we pay to do what we can do for ourselves with the right knowledge.
    Let’s not forget that marketers are running businesses too & their profits depend on persuading us paying for their services, whether we need them or not.

    What this infographic gives us is some of that professional knowledge, enough to kick off our own ad campaigns and rake in some cash. In the process learning enough to find out what we actually need to do to grow our enterprises.
    Then we can think about getting (and maybe be able to afford) a bespoke paid for ad campaign.
